This is the Aptera Typ-1, a very funky looking little car available in 2 models: the all electric Aptera Local, and the plug-in hybrid Aptera Everywhere. The Aptera Local has a range of 120 miles, while the Aptera Everywhere claims a range of 600-700 miles on a full tank (of up to 5 gallons). Gas mileage varies, but the 300 miles per gallon figure applies to a trip of 120 miles on a fully charged battery. A trip utilizing the full tank capacity is said to average about 120 miles per gallon (I'll take it!). Estimated prices are $27,000 for the all electric model and $30,000 for the plug-in hybrid.

Features of the Aptera-Typ 1 include LED running and interior lights, keyless ignition, and a climate control system which is always on operated by solar cells under the roof, ensuring the inside of the car is always comfortable. An in-console touch screen includes a radio, CD/DVD/MP3 player and GPS navigation. There is also an "eyes forward" system that replaces the side mirrors with cameras to display a 180-degree rear view. The seats and flooring are made from recycled materials and organic dyes, and no heavy metals or plasticizers are used in the dashboard or door panels.

Production of the all-electric model is slated to start late this year with the hybrid starting late next year. The Aptera Typ-1 will only be available in California to start, but, if all goes well, should be available nationwide... someday?

  1. Any car that can get 300 miles per gallon gets an A+ in my book! When it goes on the market, it might be worth a trip to California. Now if automakers could start production of an eco-friendly family vehicle, all would be well in the world. Cause lets face it...green or not, 5 people aren't going to fit in that space ship :)

  3. My husband said the same thing, Jennae, about needing a larger eco-friendly car, at least large enough to have a backseat, that is. I'm pretty sure many families would be happy to spend $30,000 for a family car that gets 300 MPG!

  4. No way! 300MPG? I want that, now. I mean now!

Ha. The only thing against it is it's weird design. Am I supposed to be going to the moon?

  5. That is really cool that it gets so much, plus it looks from the future. I cannot wait to see more cars like this on the road and less gas guzzling SUVs that a petite woman will drive to pick up a movie from the store 10 miles away.

Lol! It does kind of look like a moon pod, huh?

Trenton, I can't stand seeing anyone in those huge beast SUVs, especially when they are complaining about gas prices! SUVs are a status symbol here and it drives me crazy!
