January 8th's Tip

iron.jpgIroning: You probably know that you can turn your oven off early and it will keep cooking your food (as long as you don't open the door and let all the heat out!), but did you ever think about turning your iron off early?

Consider how long your iron stays hot once you are done using it and turn it off. It's at least a good 5 minutes or so, right? Maybe more? All that residual heat is pretty much going to waste if you aren't using the iron during that time, so why not turn the iron off a few minutes before you're done, and use the heat that's leftover? It should give you enough time to iron a shirt or two more, and save a few minutes of energy.

A tiny step, but they do add up.

  1. I never thought I'd see my mom using an ecological method before it was published or recognized as useful. Before the separation my mom used to iron my dad's shirts and i always noticed that she would turn it off before finishing ironing. She thought it was the logical thing to do, now it's the ecological thing to do.

  2. I thought I was the only person that did these things. Good point about the iron...although there my be some trial and error. When I put the kids in the tub I always plug the tub first then turn the water on...not vice versa. Small but over time its a lot of water

  3. Stef,

I never thought about it that way. Drat! I swear the simple things in life are the things that I always miss!!!!

Will start trying to use this method, I wonder how much in savings I can benefit from by using little tips like these?

    Thanks!

    -Mike

  4. Nice tip, I used to do that once in a while but now I'll have to do it all the time. I bet I could easily iron an entire garment with whats left over. I'll have to tell my co-workers about this. Thanks :)

  5. I've been doing that for a while, but I've never come across a site sharing these little tips. It's amazing how if everyone does the little things to save energy it all adds up! Great Post.

  6. Thanks, I'll try to implement the above tips :)

  7. All these small tips do mount up. Especially with the price of electricity these days.

  8. That is really a nice tip. Have never thought about it before. Actually have not thought about oven either. Will check the rest of the tips too. Your site looks really friendly. I love it.

  9. Great Post. Absolute FANTASTIC!!

  10. Thanks for this article - I extremely liked the idea about ironing - I could never imagine that even ironing can be eco-friendly!
