November 13th's Tip

Cooking: You've all heard the tip for skipping preheating. For most items, your food will be just fine (I don't bake much but I've read that you might want to continue preheating for foods that need to rise, can't say based on experience). How about turning your oven off early?

As long as you don't open the oven door, the heat will remain inside for some time, even if you turn it off. Try turning it off 5 minutes before your food is done cooking. You'll save 5 minutes of electric or gas. A tiny step, but consider if you do this once a day, every day of the year - 365days x 5minutes = 1825 minutes or over 30 hours less that your oven will be running.

  1. So very true, its always a good idea to save everywhere you can. I find that we end up having to "air" out the place after cooking due to the heat....

  2. Thank you for an excellent method to save electric power during baking. Necessarily I will take advantage of your advice.

  3. These are great tips... I actually heard this from my grandmother..another thing she used to do before I realized the importance of conserving... she would come in my room in the middle of the night and cut off the ceiling fans while I would be asleep.

  4. Good tip. Never really thought of turning the oven off early, but it makes complete sense.

  5. Good tip - the oven stays hot for a long period of time, turning it off and it will still continue to cook.

  6. Nice post i didn't know how to safe electric power during baking but with these tips i now know how to do it.Thanks alot for sharing.

  7. Just wanted to say great job with the blog, today is my first visit here and I’ve enjoyed reading your posts.

  8. That sounds great! 5 minutes of turning off the oven will definitely create a huge difference. I think it wise for faucet too. If you are not using water, do not let it run like when you brush your teeth. Also, instead of using shower, you can have a pale instead...
