Eco-Friendly Friday

August 8th's Tip

Books: According to Eco-Libris, 4.15 billion books are produced in the US every year (2006 figures), which results in more than 20 million trees being cut down. If these numbers disturb you, there are some steps you can take to lowering your impact in regards to books.

Instead of reading books, how about eBooks blank? These are books that you can read online, no paper required. EcoBrain offers "green books for green living" in electronic format. If you need to hold that book in your hand, or if you have trouble reading the computer monitor for long periods of time, you can take books out at the library, or get them from FreeCycle or Craigslist. I just got about 100 books for free from Craigslist the other day!

Eco-Libris offers an option to balance out the paper from your books. Through them, you can pay to plant trees for the number of books you would like to balance out. Five trees for $5, ten trees for $10, twenty-five trees for $23.50, and so on, up to 500 trees or more. Through their partnership with EcoBrain, you can now plant one tree at a time for $1.

Remember the video tip from last week? I received an email from Eric Rochow of Real World Green, who created the tip, letting me know to feel free to post their weekly tip on Focus Organic every week. I'm considering it, but was wondering your thoughts? Would you like to see his weekly video tip posted here weekly (probably on Saturday or Sunday)?

  3. I definitely will be planting some trees...

I also will be checking out Ecobrain for mp3 downloads... I'm always looking for something good to listen to on my iPod.

  4. I really agree with this post. I haven't purchased a book in a long time. I love my Kindle from Amazon.

  5. I'm one of those shameless book collector types. I hold on to pretty much all of the books I've bought, and I would never consider using one of those book-reader things. It is just so odd to me. Part of the joy of reading a book is smelling the new crisp pages as your turn, and looking at the beautiful artwork on the cover or, if it's a very old book, thinking about all of the other people who have held that very book through the ages...

Imagine how silly a couple would look, curled up in front of a fireplace, reading poetry from a silver screen, haha!

And I guarantee, those are not good for the eyes after many hours.

However, I'm definitely bookmarking that eco-libris site because I never realized how guilty I should feel until now, haha. It is sort of ironic that my favorite place to read a book is under a big tree :P

  6. Sarah, thanks so much for the compliments! Your last one about your link being the only thing missing made me giggle. That definitely deserves a link back, so I've added you to the links in my sidebar :) I also approved your ad on Entrecard.

    Thank you, Heather!

Organic, if you do download mp3s from Ecobrain, let me know how they are!

Bible Kids Crafts, how does that work? Does it get tiring for your eyes like reading a computer screen?

Ashley, I really enjoy the feeling of reading an old book, like you said. That's a more eco way to read books, though, rather than buying new ones. I definitely agree that reading the computer screen for hours at a time is horrible on your eyes, believe me, I know! Feeling guilty is a staple for a greenie. I was just telling me husband earlier today that writing this website clues me in to a lot of things about the world that I don't really like!
