Eco-Friendly Friday

July 25th's Tip

Electric razors: There's the obvious benefit: throwing away less disposables. Sure, you'll have to replace an electric razor once in a while, but it won't be once a week or more like with disposables. You'll also be throwing away less or no shaving gel/cream containers, because you won't need it. Another bonus of electric razors: you'll use less water. Even if you use a wet/dry razor, you'll get your shaving done faster in the shower than you would with a disposable and shaving gel.

The same can be said for electric toothbrushes. If you get a rechargeable toothbrush with replaceable heads, you won't even need batteries. Just remember to unplug it when it's done charging! There are also regular toothbrushes with replaceable heads available.

  1. You might want to think about doing just a little bit of composting and starting your own garden as well - even if you only have an apartment you can grow a surprising amount of vegetables in a container garden if you plan it out right.

I kinda started mine a bit backwards. If I'd planned more this winter I wouldn't have the fast-growing sugar snaps in the smaller pots and the lower-to-the-ground peas planted near the trellis ;)

  2. Øystein, thank you for the tip :) We've considered container gardening in our condo, but I'm not sure how well it would work out. We have almost no natural lighting coming in, and anywhere we could put containers to get natural light would be in reach of our cats, one of which likes to eat EVERYTHING (she even eats fuzz!).

  3. Well, planting catmint is probably right out then :)

There's some things you can do with hydroponics and soilless gardening - AeroGarden has a few interesting things out. And Windowbox. Though it's slightly dodgy from a DeepGreen perspective since neither product line is 100% certified green and there's quite a few bits of plastic involved in setting it up.

Though sod that - I think it doesn't need to be perfect, it just need to be an improvement. Might be tricky to grow your own potatoes that way, but you can still get a good crop of herbs in - as long as you avoid the catmint :)

  4. My facial hair, which is the only place I shave grows slow enough where I can get away with shaving once a week, twice if I'm trying to look somewhat clean-shaven. Would it still be greener to go with an electric razor? I literally get months and months out of my disposable razors so it's tough for me to imagine an electric razor being greener, especially since I use only a little shaving lotion.

Also, wouldn't the ultimate green shaving method be to get a straight edge razor and then just sharpen it as needed?

  6. I use an electrical razor for multiple reasons:

It's easier to use, faster, and generally I get a better shave. Now that you bring up the eco-friendliness I will never even consider using a regular razor.

    Definitely is :)

Adam, in your case, I don't know. And you're right, a straight edge would be very green, but as a woman, I can't imagine shaving my legs with one! Lol.

    Laur, you're welcome!

intalk, those are some of the biggest reasons I bought an electric razor myself, I badly wanted something that was faster. I have a hard enough time keeping my showers short without shaving in them too!
