Eco-Friendly Friday

August 15th's Tip

Tomatoes: Never refrigerate tomatoes. Cold kills flavor, nutrients, and texture. On the flip side, heat makes tomatoes mushy and flavorless. Ideal tomato temperature is between 55 and 70 degrees F. To ripen tomatoes, store them in a pierced paper bag at room temperature with an apple for a few days.

  1. I've been keeping my tomatoes in my refrigerator and they taste disgusting. I didn't know why, either. I just always assumed that that's where you stick tomatoes. Thanks for the tip!

  2. I hate tomatoes... I hate ketchup... but I love salsa... I know, i'm weird. Refrigerating salsa doesn't seem to make it taste bad...

  3. Why do you have to put them in the bag with an apple? I don't get it.

  4. hi there!.. nice blog.. I really enjoyed reading it. thanks! cheers..

may I invite you to visit my blog? I may be able to help you with your blog somehow.. i also make blog reviews, I would really love to exchange blog reviews with you.

  5. surprised....I thought keeping tomatoes out of fridge will spoil them easily...

  6. Dani and Bollywood, this tip was actually new to me, also. I too always assumed the fridge was the place to put them!

Organic, that's not that weird. My brother HATES tomatoes with a passion, but is a huge ketchup fan. When we were kids I convinced him to put ketchup on ice cream... too bad mom stopped him!

Free Blogger Templates, do you have an eco related website? I would love to trade reviews with you, if so. I'm trying to keep to the eco topics here :)

  7. Tech, the apple releases ethylene gas, which speeds up the tomato's ripening.

  8. We always keep our tomatoes on the window seal in the kitchen. I LOVE tomatoes -- yum!

  9. I've never really kept my tomatoes in the fridge. We typically leave ours in a small basket in the kitchen.

  10. Jenna, the heat from the sun doesn't affect them?

Auto, that seems like it's probably the best place for them!

  11. Hmmm... that is good to know because I ALWAYS refrigerate my tomatoes. I don't even know why I do it, they aren't refrigerated in the store, but I bring them home and throw them in the drawer.

  12. Penny, I was doing the same thing, don't feel bad!
