Eco-Friendly Friday

August 15th's Tip

Tomatoes: Never refrigerate tomatoes. Cold kills flavor, nutrients, and texture. On the flip side, heat makes tomatoes mushy and flavorless. Ideal tomato temperature is between 55 and 70 degrees F. To ripen tomatoes, store them in a pierced paper bag at room temperature with an apple for a few days.

  1. I've been keeping my tomatoes in my refrigerator and they taste disgusting. I didn't know why, either. I just always assumed that that's where you stick tomatoes. Thanks for the tip!

  6. Dani and Bollywood, this tip was actually new to me, also. I too always assumed the fridge was the place to put them!

Organic, that's not that weird. My brother HATES tomatoes with a passion, but is a huge ketchup fan. When we were kids I convinced him to put ketchup on ice cream... too bad mom stopped him!

Free Blogger Templates, do you have an eco related website? I would love to trade reviews with you, if so. I'm trying to keep to the eco topics here :)

  7. Tech, the apple releases ethylene gas, which speeds up the tomato's ripening.

  11. Hmmm... that is good to know because I ALWAYS refrigerate my tomatoes. I don't even know why I do it, they aren't refrigerated in the store, but I bring them home and throw them in the drawer.
