Eco-Friendly Friday

August 29th's Tip

Air Conditioning/Heating: You all know about turning the temperature up or down (depending on the season) about two degrees to save energy. What about when you go out? Do you really need to keep your house at 74F in the summer or 68F in the winter or whatever temperature you have it at when you're home? When you leave for work or go on vacation, turn your thermostat up or down (again, depending on the season) 5 to 10 degrees. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set it and forget it, at least for leaving the house for work. The change you want to make depends on your level of comfort with the idea, and whether or not you have pets in the home. When we go visit family in the winter, I plan to turn the thermostat to between 60 and 63F.

  1. Those tips are quite good! My dad never turns on the heat of the AC, saying instead "Go put on a sweater" or "Drink Water."

  2. Panda, lol. Sounds like my dad. He tries to never run the air conditioning, but my mom freaks out about it when it gets above 70ish. When I am at their house I have to wrap up in a blanket... in the summer!

  3. That's a great tip. I always cut our air up or either I cut it off when we're not home. It's a waste of energy and money!

  5. Jane, hope you see a reduction in your electric bill :)

  6. Auto Transport, do you notice that your electric bill is lower because of it?

  7. We set our summer temp to 81 - all day the same because we have people and pets here all the time. In the winter we set to 68 during the day and 60 at night (we have blankets and pets have fur).

My electric bill is huge, but that's just because we pay so much per kwh.

  8. Annie, 81? Wow, you have more will power than I do!

We also set to 68 in the winter, which I love because I have an excuse to wear sweaters indoors and out.

  9. Well, I also use a programmable thermostat and leave the house to work.
