Eco-Friendly Friday

November 7th's Tip

Leaves: With the leaves falling all around us, it's probably time you're thinking about what to do with them all. As a kid, I LOVED jumping in the big piles of leaves (still have doubt that Autumn is my favorite season :D ), but eventually it's time to do something about them before winter settles in.

Bagging the leaves up for the dump seems the simplest solution, but why? Leaves aren't garbage, they're nature, and bagging and dumping them seems silly, to me! How about using that as mulch or compost for your garden?

Using the leaves as mulch is as easy as shredding them up, which you can do with your lawn mower if necessary. Composting is more tedious work and involves much more time, but your garden can definitely benefit from it. You can read more about both options and their differing benefits here.

  1. Oh how I loved playing with leaves back when I visited my aunt and uncle in the east. It was really fun. Too bad my tree isn't the kind where it sheds nice fall leaves like that.

  2. I just leave the leaves, as you said they are part of nature. So why do anything about them?

  4. I love this article. We use our leaves in our compost, but never thought to use it as mulch!

  5. I'd love to experience Autumn. We don't have that here.

  6. We have a lot of leaves every autumn in our home court, and what we to is shredding them up in the little garden we have. It is not useful as composting, but as we don't have time for that, it is better then trowing it in garbage.

  7. I usually shred them up with the lawn mower. While I enjoy looking at them and don't mind them on my lawn, not everyone shares the see feeling as me and eventually those leaves are going to blow on my neighbors lawns.

  8. I usually gather all the leaves I have in my garden, and let my kids play with them :)

  9. Jane, some people rake them up so they don't blow into other people's yards. They are beautiful just sitting there, though, aren't they?

Filipina, we're originally from New England, so we've experienced beautiful Autumns. Unfortunately, they aren't so nice where we live now.

Kelly, at least you are making them useful!

Longitude, that's true. They are beautiful while they last, though.

Stofledning, that was one of my favorite things about the season as a kid :)
