I'm so glad the day is finally here... I'm unbelievably tired of phone calls, television ads, and volunteers showing up at my door...It would be a lie to say I don't care who you vote for today, but the important thing is that you do vote. Still undecided? Here are a few comparisons on some of the issues that are most important to me (for more comparisons, visit SelectSmart, where you can also compare 3rd party candidates, and those no longer in the running).
War Authorization
Obama: As a state senator, he spoke out against Iraq war, before the war started. Has long favored a phased withdrawal.McCain: Supports Bush's surge, in fact, calls for more additional troops than Bush recommends.
Social Security
Obama: Senator Obama supported the interests of the Alliance for Retired Americans 100 percent in 2005.McCain: Would allow workers to invest a portion of their payroll tax in private accounts which they manage themselves.
Stem Cell Research
Obama: Supports federally funded stem cell research.McCain: Supports stem cell research on existing lines of stem cells, but not new lines.
Same Sex Issues
Obama: Opposes gay marriage; supports civil union & gay equality.McCain: Usually opposes gay marriage, but in an MSNBC "Hardball" interview he seemingly both supported and opposed gay marriage. “I think that gay marriage should be allowed, if there‘s a ceremony kind of thing, if you want to call it that. I don‘t have any problem with that, but I do believe in preserving the sanctity of a union between man and woman.” "On the issue of the gay marriage, I believe that people want to have private ceremonies, that‘s fine. I do not believe that gay marriages should be legal."
My Thoughts: Is it a political thing to oppose same sex marriage? Especially to oppose same sex marriage but support civil union? Is that a way to reach a wider audience? I want to see someone in power who supports same sex marriage AND same sex equality...
Abortion Issues
Obama: Obama supported the interests of the Planned Parenthood 100 percent in 2006. Obama supported the interests of the National Right to Life Committee 0 percent in 2005-2006. Obama supported the interests of the NARAL Pro-Choice America 100 percent in 2005.McCain: McCain supported the interests of the Planned Parenthood 0% in 2006. He supported the interests of the National Right to Life Committee 75% in 2005-2006. He supported the interests of the NARAL Pro-Choice America 0% in 2005.
Health Care
Obama: "Too many hard-working Americans cannot afford their medical bills, and health-related issues are the number one cause for personal bankruptcy. Promoting affordable, accessible, and high-quality health care is a priority for Senator Obama."McCain: Opposes universal health care.
Environmental Issues
Obama: Obama supported the interests of the American Wilderness Coalition 100 percent in 2005. Obama supported the interests of the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund 88 percent in 2005. Obama supported the interests of the League of Conservation Voters 95 percent in 2005.McCain: Groups like the American Wilderness Coalition, Wildlife Action Fund and the League of Conservation Voters give McCain scores at or near 50%.
