Riding a bike is a fun, environmentally friendly way of getting around - much more so than a car. Sometimes, though, riding a bike isn't the most efficient way to get around. Think heading to the market or bringing the kids to a friends house. How are you going to haul your groceries or your kids on your bike? Unless you plan on strapping them to your back (can you picture that?), a car seems to be an easier option. Not anymore.
Madsen Cycles are cargo bikes meant to make biking more economical. With the bucket bike, which comes with a removable bench with seat belts, you can strap your kids in and go for a ride, or pack your groceries from the local farmer's market in the tub.
Here are some specs on the kg271 bucket bike:
- Frame. OST Hi-ten steel. Step-through frame.
- Derailleur. SRAM X5 8-speed
- Shifter. SRAM X5 trigger shifters
- Disk Brake. Promax 160mm
- Stem. Promax adjustable 1 1/8''
- Colors. Black, Cream, Blue
- Size. Adjustable for a variety of body types including 5'- 6'6'' builds.
- Bucket. 40 gallon, LLDPE rigid plastic cargo carrier. Comes with rear removable bench seat and two seatbelts.
- MSRP. $1299
The Madsen Cycle is also available in a rack model, with an MSRP of $1099.
Sound good? Want one? Well, thanks to the generous people at Madsen Cycles, one lucky Focus Organic reader is going to win the bucket model Madsen. You heard right! It will come right to your door, fully assembled. All you have to do is be ready to ride!

WOw, what a fantastic giveaway! I would love to use this to run errands that are too far to walk, but still close enough that I don't have to drive. My girls would love the bench seating. This would also be great to just take cruises in for pure pleasure! Thanks so much!

I've been thinking about getting a bike - but I didn't want to get a seat or trailer for my daughter. I don't think I would be very safe with that. However, this bike, with its cargo bucket, looks like an interesting option. I would like to be able to ride the trails near our house for exercise, but it would be great for taking my girl to the park and the library!

I NEED this bike because where I live, everything is accessible to me within 4 miles, but because I have a 6 year old child I am forced to drive my car everywhere. It would really save me money on gas, cut down pollution, and get me some exercise. This bike is exactly what I need! I would use it more than my car in every aspect of my life!

Hey. The seat does it for me! I have three boys. Two of them are old enough to ride a bike. One of them is not. I would love to be able to go bike-riding with my kids but can't leave the little one at home. This way I could take him with me and we could all ride places together!

Oh I love, love, love this bike. I live within three miles of grocery stores, whole food marts and other cool stores. I used to walk to a lot of these until about four years ago when I developed some hip issues. Oddly, I can ride my exercise bike but long walking just kills me...well, not literally. I can totally see people in our neighborhood clamoring to find out where this bike came from so it would be great advertising as well. And you know, there's nothing more appealing then a slighly chubby, 50-something year old riding a cool bike. Everyone will figure if I can do it they can do it! Gosh, I really, really hope you pick me! The only bad thing is my huffing and puffing may contribute a teensy, weensy bit of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere but not nearly as much as my car.

This would be AWESOME! We drive a large vehicle (which, obviously uses quite a bit of gas) because we have kids and I work from home (carry stock). I would LOVE nothing more than to save gas and help the environment by toting the kids on the back of this and biking. Wonderful way for me to slim down, too! WOOHOOO! I have to take my recycling to a city dumpster, the closest one is 1 mile away from my house. I really hate that I have to get in my car to take my biweekly bag of recycling to the dumpster. I really wish I could just ride my bike there because the distance is so short and I normally pass the recycling dumpster every week when I ride my bike to the shopping center/mall that is 3.5 miles from my house. Sadly I can't buy much like groceries because what I carry on my bike must fit into my backpack. With this bike I could take my recycling to the dumpster on my way to the shopping center and do some real grocery shopping rather than just buy a gallon of milk.

Right now, we don't own a car, and we live in a pretty rural area where there's no bus service. We share a car, but when it's not available, this would be really great to allow us to run errands without worrying about how we're going to walk with a large load. The huge cargo bin would mean my husband or I could even bike to the nearest grocery store and do our weekly shopping. And it might give us more incentive to remain carless

Oh, I have never ever seen the Madsen Bucket Cargo Bike before. I am in AWE. I could make great use of this bike. First of all the Bucket, what a terrific idea. I have a old bike now which I ride, I like to ride it to the store, I have a small basket on the handlebars but it doesn't hold much. I am trying to go more green this year as well as to get more healthy. Biking and Walking are becoming a huge part of this endeavor.
I could use this bike to go to the post office, Drop off the recycleables at the recycling place here in town then stop by the grocery and grab what I need, ooh and the town square farmers market. Terrific, No gasoline, no using the car. Also this would be fantastic for taking the kiddos to the park, it is really too far for them to walk, but close enough for them to ride on the back of the Madsen Cargo Bike.
Thanks for the introduction and the chance to win.. I really love it.

First off, this is a fabulous giveaway. Why do I want to win? Well, I only live about two blocks away from where I work. Not far! BUT! Can you imagine how hard it is to ride a bike to work with a purse, a lunch and often another big bag full of misc items? Not very do-able! This would remedy that and hopefully encourage others to do the same!

I've made a huge effort to go green in as many ways as possible, including installing a federally-registered nature garden in my yard to provide shelter, nesting and food for the animals in our area. I am constantly refilling my feeders and adding new plants and such to my garden, so I'd use the bike to go from here to Lowes to get new supplies for my garden. I'd also use it to go to the Food Lion (about 2 miles from home) and I'd use the bench to take my neighbor's small children on rides since it comes with seatbelts. I could even use the bucket to take my three rescued MinPins for rides because I can rig up a cushion and containment cover for it that would allow me to bike with them to my friend's house so all of our dogs can play together - doggie play dates...giggle.

I love walking and riding bikes but with twins it's almost impossible, especially when I have grocery shopping to do and need to take home bags. I didn't even know there was a bike that has a basket and seats for the kids- sounds wonderful to me (and a lot easier to find parking)

My children and I are planning on going around our neighborhood this summer and doing yardwork and odd jobs for the elderly people that live around us (there are a lot) to just help them out and let them know people care about them. This bike would be absolutely perfect for transporting the yard tools around that we will need! This would just be awesome! It would also be a cool thing to have during all the garage sales that go on in the summer. I could ride the bike around to them instead of using the car and I'd still have a way to get all my goodies home!

I live in a 50's-vintage suburb of Chicago, which means that the grocery store is a little too far to walk to, but it just seems silly (not to mention exceedingly un-green) to fire up the car for such a short ride. This would be a great fair-weather alternative!

This would come in so handy when we do our door to door bottle drives and clean up days. I live in Maine and all bottles are recycled and in the spring we always clean up the road sides in order to keep our state clean. I could also use it to go to the local grocery store and the post office while running errands every day. We also have to lug our water from the well down the road and this would cut our lugging time in half not to mention save on our arms lol Thanks for sharing & for Caring~!

I would be so happy to win this! Next month we are moving from a three bedroom to a two bedroom house in an deliberate downsize to save money and use less of the Earth's resources. I got my first driver's license in 1952 when I was 17 and drove all those years until 2005 when I had knee replacements in both knees and after that I didn't feel that I had the strength or the reaction time in my legs to drive safely so I gave up driving however during my physical therapy I worked on the stationary bike and after took up biking as a means of getting around. Would dearly love to have this for following my hobby which is going to garage and rummage sales. My son takes me sometimes but he is usualy busy on weekends and this bike would be just the thing.

There are SO many reasons why I would love to win this dream machine called the Madsen Bucket Cargo Cycle! First and foremost because it is the ultimate vehicle to draw attention to everyone around you that "greening up your act" can be fun for the entire family! I want to be a great role model to my children, family and friends and I know when I sport this Madsen Cycle around town it WILL catch the eyes of so many people. Secondly, my husband and I have been making SO many changes to our lifestyle over the past 4 months to really make our household a much "greener" one, but there is still so much more we want to do. This cycle will allow us to move forward one more step in our journey towards achieving those goals. Third, we are a very active family, we have 3 young children, and bike riding is one of our favorite activities to do as a family. Can you imagine the fun and excitement the kids will have riding in this and the educational tool for them I can use this as, very cool! Our supermarket is about 3 miles from our home. I would have no problem using this cargo cycle as my main source of transportation when I go to the market. It would give my husband and I a great sense of pride and accomplishment if we used it for that purpose. It would be an adventure for us! I want to thank you so much for the opportunity to enter.

We're also trying to be more GREEN and what better way to get around than on your own power. We live in a very biking/walking friendly suburb of Cleveland, OH. Last year we bought a mini-van so that it was easier to get around with the kids, dog, and gear when needed. With this purchase I vowed that when we did NOT need a car we would always walk/bike. It has been a great compromise and well worth the purchase. This bike would continue us on the path of that promise.

I would go biking everywhere! The grocery store, library, downtown, the beach, etc. I walk or take the bus everywhere right now so this would be a great way to help eliminate my bus usage.

I want to win the Madsen Cycle because my fiance and I are really trying to retire the car for these warmer months in our effort to be green! It would be perfect, it could carry all of our groceries in one go, I could keep my backpack in that instead of on my back, and if my 3-year-old niece wanted a ride, I could give her one!

I would love to win the bike as my husband and I are both disabled, myself with arthritis, plus our car is an older "carbon spewing" gas hog-so this bicycle would be ideal for me to get the extra exercise my Dr. wants me to,plus I could use the bike to go shopping and run almost any errand, beacause of the nice big basket on the back. And I wouldn't have to drive the car much of anyplace, thus saving us $$ and helping the environment. Good Luck to everyone.

I could pop my work clothes in the bucket (and shower stuff...and hair dryer) and off I would go! We just moved into town. All the stores are much closer now but we still drive places. One, I don't have a bike. Two, how do you carry groceries. This would be fantastic for going shopping around town. I think it would also be handy for yard work. I'm renting a house on several hundred acres. I could haul materials out to the outer limits of the property when doing yard work. Hmmm, wonder how many dogs I can fit in the bucket???

I bike to work and for errands, but I always have to drive to the store because I really don't have any way to haul more than a few things when I'm on my bike. I've tried the rack with grocery baskets, but they don't hold much weight and make the bike unbalanced. The cargo bike is a great idea and looks like it will do a better job of balancing a heavy load. If I had one, I could definitely reduce the number of car trips I needed to take.

BUT, best of all.. I am about to become a YOUNG Gramma for the first time in October and I would love to be able to tote my little Grandbaby around in the back of this bike (using all safety precautions of course!!!) when he or she is old enough!!!!)

What an awesome bike this is! Where we live now in Oklahoma I could ride this a lot...to the grocery store, the post office, etc. At our permanent home in Montana, it's 9 miles to town, so it would be limited to great weather and "feel good" days for those trips. But we do a lot of shorter trips, 1-3 miles to see neighbors, etc. and this would be so great for that!

I currently only drive when I need to haul items that are either too heavy or too large to carry. This bike will allow me to almost completely lose the car! Also, this bike will allow me to bike to work - I currently take a train. Not to mention getting in a good workout at the same time!
This will also be a good method to get my cat around town. My cat HATES the car. She yowls while the car is on. Having this bike will make transporting her less stressful on her and me!

We belong to an organic CSA whose pick up site is about two miles from here, and while I could, technically, walk there, I just can't fit all the yummy produce into my backpack, so I have to drive, which annoys me. Plus I'd be able to get a bunch of groceries from the 5 mile away whole foods... and be able to pick up stuff from the hardware store and gardening center... and, well, heck, most things I need to pick up or haul around would fit in the cargo area, and I could leave my car at home almost all the time. How fun!

I would like to win this because I grown a very large fruit and vegetable garden every year. I like to share some of the organic produce with relatives who are in their mid eighties and other people that I know. It's hard taking enough produce to them in just a backpack, and you can only do that for one person at a time. With the bucket I could take more produce to them as well as to more than one family at a time.
I would also like to get a part time job in my community and the bike would be nice to ride to and from work.
When I babysit for friends I could take their children for a ride with the bench that has seat belts.
Besides riding a bike would be good exercise and help me lose some weight too.
Count me in, I'd like to win.
Good luck to all.

My sister called me to tell me about this bike offer. We live on a very secluded coastal town, which is only about one mile long and half mile wide. With today"s economy we are starting to provide organic produce, and eggs for our community, which includes our tiny local food back in which I am involved. This would be the perfect solution to getting things to friends in our community without adding to the carbon footprint and making what I do a happy and healthy thing for me too!
Here's wishing, praying, inviting, and hoping for a wonderful addition to my "coastal concierge" efforts ......
After having seven children, I have good reason to stay as healthy and active as I can. Our children are now 34,28,27,26,13,11,and 9......and grand baby number six is due next month !

Awesome, awesome giveaway! I live in town and live close to the grocery store, library, park and pool, but all are just far enough away that unless I feel like a good walking workout I often opt to use the car. This would be just amazing. Plus my daughter would have so much fun being a passenger! Thanks for offering this!

I recently moved into town, I have everything I need within walking or biking distance but no bicycle at this time or vehicle. It would be a huge help in that. I would use it all over town to go here and there to pick up things and head to work everyday. I walk now.

My wife and I share a gardening blog and we love your bikes. I just bought an iMac so our funds are low to purchase the bike we want. We could do a lot with the cargo bike (if it ever stops raining)like taking the kids to the garden, transporting our organically grown produce to and from the our house, getting books and movies at the library, visiting my parents with minimal hassle (travel wise anyway!), taking the dogs to the "field", grocery shopping, exercise, shuttling the kids to the park, and in the process of all of this, save gas!

I have never seen a bike like this. What a great idea! I would use it to go to the library and the grocery store. We check out 20+ books at a time, so we could certainly use the cargo space! And the supermarket is only 2.5 miles away, but shopping weekly for a family of 5 generates more groceries than can easily be carried on a normal bike. And we could go on dinner picnics along the bike trails... I think I would use this a lot!

I really want to win the Madsen Cycle because it would cut down even further on the amount of driving I do. I have often lamented about having to take the car to go to the other side of town to get to the farmer's market with at least one child. I end up thinking I should get up early in the morning and go the 4+ miles roundtrip on my own by bicycle, but then my children would miss out on experiencing the farmer's market. They enjoy going and I too want them to participate in buying local organic produce and other locally-made items. This desire wins out, so I end up taking the car...not as environmentally-friendly as I would like to be. The Madsen would solve this inner struggle by allowing me to do both - go to the farmer's market emission-free with my child/ren. Thanks!!!

I don't own a bike and lately my kids have been wanting to go on bike rides, so I was thinking about looking into getting a cheap bike, I have gained a few pounds so want to get a sturdier bike. Well sadly our family was in a car accident on saturday 100 miles from home and our car was unable to be driven home. So money will be going towards that purpose. We live within a couple of miles from a grocery store so this bike would be perfect to save money, save gas, get me into shape, spend time with my kids, and be the talk of the neighborhood. I also love being the 1st one with the newest gadgets and products.

Wow, this bike would just be so awesome for me! I have recently gained weight as I had to have a hyserectomy due to stage 1 cancer, which thankfully is completely gone now, however my hysterectomy threw me into an early medical menopause & I need this weight off my body! I live close to many stores, but too far to walk & this bike would help me so much! I would love to stop driving & go to the stores on a bike, the only problem is I don't have a place to put my bags and can't hold several bags and ride a bike at the same time! This bike is perfect! I didin't even realize they made something like this! I hope I win! I am going to check out this bike website & spread the word! Awesome product!

The bike reminds me of my dad, who always had unique things like this. We lost him a few years ago, I have one of his things, a pedal car that is a replica of the Oscar Meyer weinermobile.

I have grocery stores nearby to where I live. I could ride this to the store and carry my groceries in it and I could ride to other nearby shops, pharmacy, post office, etc. There is also a produce market close to home that I could ride to and carry home my
items.

What a fantastic giveaway! I'd get so much use out of a cargo bike, and it would be great to minimize the use of my car. For example, I could do my grocery shopping, ride the bike to school and not worry about having a heavy load of books and supplies, bring back lunch for my entire lab, swing by the library and check out as many materials as I wish, and take the bike to our community garden with all of my tools in tow. Thanks so much for the chance to win!

We have a hobby in which most people ride scooters or some type of stv back and forth on the grounds. You really can't walk the entire time and you must transport needed items across from one place to another frequently so most have racks on their atv's or pull wagons. I need the exercise and the cargo space, this bike would be just the ticket plus it would get lots of eyes on it every weekend and possibly a bit of tv time!
Thank you so much!

I live in a community that has just about everything
needed within a 2-3 mile radius. I am also driving a
car that has 145,000 miles on the odometer..(both of
my kids had this used car before I inherited it!) Now
that both are out of college, I'd like to get my life
back - including a little quiet time and exercise - how nice this bicycle would be!

I want this cargo bike because I want a way for my kids to be able to take the herbs that they grow in our garden this year to sell at our farmer's market a few blocks down. They can haul the cargo by themselves without my help which will give them more of a feeling that it is their own project that they manage for themselves.

We have been walking to our local market with canvas bags long before fuel costs shot up and being "green" became vogue. The problem is that the round trip walk takes about thirty minutes, and this great bike would cut the travel time in half as well as help keep the abdominals and tush firm! We have baskets and carriers on our ten speeds but nothing like this one! Its a really good idea!

This bike is a amazing! I could use it to take my kids to the neighborhood park. With this bike, we could ALL ride and not have to worry about how we will manage the diaper bag, the snacks and drinks, extra shoes, jackets, etc. Thanks for the opportunity to enter!
My daughter would love it if we had a bike like this. She loves to ride her bike wherever we go, but we often have to leave it at home so that I can lug all the things that we purchase. Since we live in a smaller town, we could take the bike to the store, the PO, just about anywhere and leave the car behind. What a wonderful idea - healthy, green, and a great way to build lasting memories.

Thanks for the giveaway...
I bike to work or take the bus 2-3X a week but going to the grocery store for something other than a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk is difficult (and unsafe) with my current mountain bike; the Masden is a unique bike design that could cut my auto use (2-3X a week) down to 1-2X !!! (and my kids would now not have an excuse to bike over to the grocery store for a few items because "it is too far to walk, or I can't carry THAT !!!"

WOW! This is absolutely the coolest giveaway I've ever seen.
I have seriously been thinking about getting a Vespa or scooter to do small runs to the store, etc. but even that uses gas. With this bike, I could run all my errands and help save the environment at the same time! Plus... it's got me thinking of what kind of entrepreneurial business I could get into and use this...

This would have been unrealistic at my old house, but luckily we've moved to pseudo-downtown! This would be great! I've always felt guilty driving my car less than 2 miles to the grocery store, or about a mile over to my BFFs house, but realistically what choice did I have? This is a great invention! Simply great! Too bad these don't qualify for some kind of government subsidy
