Today, the the Touring Club of Switzerland named the Honda Insight the most eco-friendly car on the market for 2009. The group compiles data in categories including emissions, fuel efficiency, and noise pollution.
For fuel efficiency, the Honda Insight gets about 53.5 miles to the gallon. The car beat the Fiat Punto to most eco-friendly car by 0.1 points, with the Toyota IQ 1.0 coming in third, Fiat Panda 1.2 in fourth, and the Citroën C3 1.4i GNV coming in 5th. The top eco-friendly cars of 2007 and 2008, the Toyota Prius 1.5 and Honda Civic 1.3, cam in sixth and seventh for 2009, respectively.
Honda Insight's first generation, from 2000-2006, saw a three-door hatchback design. The second generation, starting with the 2009 model, was redesigned to be a five-door hatchback. The 2010 model is rumored to cost in the neighborhood of $18,500, and we should start seeing more about it this spring, with an expected sale date of April 22nd.
My Note: Sourced article, from swissinfo says 53.5 MPG, but most other articles I've read say 40+, with the possibility of near 60 or more.

Too bad the Oil industry is too powerful, thus making eco-anything very hard...

It always amuses me to see the words 'eco-friendly' and 'car' used together... we all know it's an oxymoron, cars are not eco friendly full stop. there maybe cars that are less damaging to the environment, but then thats not such good branding. we can continue to kid ourselves that we are eco-friendly drivers

I really hope a car like Aptera becomes more popular and shows up the current set of cars that make themselves seem like the most eco-friendly car on the market.

Interesting how similar in design this model is to the successful Prius... I like it though, and while I agree with the above comments that there are no truly "eco-friendly" cars, it's definitely a step in the right direction.

I agree with those of you saying cars aren't "eco-friendly," but one can be more eco-friendly than another.

The Honda Insight is a really great eco-friendly car, but I still like the Toyota Prius better.

The new Insight is a really cool car. Honda and Toyota are fighting the fule economy war just like the Mustang and Camaro were fighting the muscle car war in the 60's.

They both want to be leaders in a car market that should become more popular soon.

Well too bad the US Gov has given the Insight a fuel economy rating of 40 city and 43 MPG hwy. But im surte there are those who will get 65 MPG by practicing hypermiling techniques.

Very interesting! We've been looking at eco-friendly hybrids and weren't sure on which to get. I think this post seals the deal for me.
