The following is a guest post from KuleKat.

Most folk these days recognize that insulating their home can be at the same time environmentally sound and cost effective, but many nevertheless don't suppose to apply this realization to their garage. Any garage which is integrated with your house is usually in effect the most significant individual interior area. It shares internal walls as well as potentially ceilings which enable it to consequently undermine the remainder of the home insulation if it isn't up to the same standard.
The specific advantages of insulating your garage are usually very little different to the ones which apply to insulating the main home. This will help sustain a comfortable, dry environment plus a steady temperature all year round. Insulating your garage doors furthermore directly improves security fairly significantly, provides supplemental soundproofing and also can help keep away dirt, unwanted wildlife, leaves and rainwater.
In addition, some folk utilize their own garages as a lot more than just somewhere allowing access to their home. And regardless of whether or not you are considering utilizing your garage for perhaps a home gym or workshop, it is commonplace these days to discover refrigerators, washers and the like, and also there may be water pipes to safeguard.
In essence, any kind of insulation can only be as effective as its weakest spot. There is certainly very little purpose, for instance, fitting double glazed windows and then neglecting to insulate the void over the ceiling, or vice versa. Anytime there's a weak point then hot or cool air is likely to trickle through, sidestepping the whole set of other defenses and rendering them close to worthless.
To sum up so far, efficient insulation will save you cash, can be eco-friendly plus can help maintain your house at a pleasant ambient temperature. However, insulation can be effective only when it’s used throughout, and for a lot of people their integral garage presents a substantial chink in their insulation armor. So then, how can you go about insulating your garage effectively?
A conventional modern day garage has a number of basic characteristics in common with a regular contemporary home, for example a floor (normally concrete), walls plus a roof space (or ceiling void, dependent upon what exactly sits above). In addition, it includes one thing fairly distinctive - an enormous great door (or doors).
Insulating the floor, ceiling and walls is usually very little different to the approach followed inside the primary dwelling zones. For instance, walls may have ordinary insulation batts introduced inside the cavity (access allowing), or else fiberglass blown inside, or even as a last resort just affixing foamboard to the inner surfaces.
Where garage doors are concerned however matters get more specialized. There are two clear weak areas: any gaps surrounding the panel as well as the door panel per se. The actual gaps are usually not that challenging - simple weather strips to the sides and a straightforward bubble seal on the underneath of the door panel can produce a tremendous improvement. Insulating a garage door itself however is determined by what exactly it is manufactured from.
Metallic door panels are usually a rather slim skin (of usually steel) that provides virtually no insulation whatever since metal is noted as an extremely efficient conductor of heat. On the other hand, being as they are at the same time very light and also in effect hollow (there is always a front and some edges yet generally no back) it is straightforward to fit high quality insulating panels to the void within the interior of the door.
Solid (i.e. wood garage door panels) possess significantly better innate insulating attributes although at the end of the day still not really near to what is often required in many localities. The fact is that unless you purchase the more advanced insulated timber garage doors (which are manufactured so as to skilfully conceal interior insulation) the alternatives with solid door panels are usually restricted to putting on reflective foil.

Its sad, but it is very easy overlook garages and so on when looking at your overall energy uses. Not only does wasting heat end up costing you cold hard cash, but the impacts of climate change have the potential to be truly terrible.

Great points as many forget to insulate their garage. I have two bedrooms above my garage and a nasty little mole ate through the garage door seal to get in and stay warm. Guess it did not help that I stored peanuts in the garage for the squirrels. Anyway, its a good opportunity to fix some cracks that are allowing drafts in.

I must say I am very surprised to see this article. As Starlight said, so many people overlook garage doors, so seeing an article (that is not from a garage door company) is a pleasant surprise. Simply put, our garage door is the largest entry way into our home, we shouldn't overlook it in our efforts to save energy.
