Jumpstart to Green is a new company that wants to make going green easy for anyone who is just starting out. Jumpstart to Green is all about going green - as a virtual company based in Boston, they have no corporate office, so "no internal memos filling the recycle bin and no commuter workforce." I believe the most useful item in the kit for my family is the Smart Strip powerstrip. With four children in the house, all with television sets hooked up with either DVD players, multiple video games, or VCR the power to these additional items gets left on for days sometimes. Having the Smart Strip powerstrip will help to say a ton of money.

I could most use the SmartStrip power strip that automatically shuts off everything plugged into it once my computer or TV are off. I've been meaning to get one, because I always forget to unplug the idle electronics that drain power even when not in use.

The insulated bags would be great for taking lunch, or bring home perishable groceries. We already have implemented the bulbs and a few other things (we even re-insulated our attic and closed off one furnace during the day when we are out). I am signing onto your email list with same email. Thanks.

The compact fluorescent bulbs. I've started using them and they are great.

I think the biggest one where we could really help make things green and save on our water bill: The Shower Timer....what a great idea. I know our showers last waaaayyyy toooo long. But I also need the power strip too.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:28 pm
What would benefit us most? The power strip because I just can't seem to remember to unplug things, the water bottle because I've been meaning to switch us over from plastic, the light bulbs because the electric bill is heinous... I could go on and on!The whole kit is fabulous!

I think the Smart Strip power strips would be the most useful for us. We generally do use reusable bags and bottles, as well as rags (though I don't know how the Euro Sponge is different), but turning off electronics is something we've been trying to do and failing to a lot of the time because it takes so long each time.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:29 pm
The power strip for us. We have so many electric items that stay plugged in all the time, ghost draining our power, I know this is bad, right now we only have one TV set and DVD player plugged into a strip, could use about 4 more to get things under control.

We really need the toilet tank bank.
This weekend, I stayed in a guest house where the water used in the toilets was captured rain water and snow melt off. I really wondered how much treated drinking water we waste just flushing!
November 24th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Oh so many items in this give away would be helpful but since I have a few more old light bulbs that need changing to cfl's I will say they would be the most useful right now for helping us reduce our electricty use.

December 3rd, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Almost all of it looks so helpful it's hard to decide which would make the largest impact.
What's striking me is how much marketing influences the ways we go green. Due to the PSA campaigns we've already switched most of our bulbs to compact fluorescents (& will switch the rest once we've upgraded some fixtures). Same with the shopping bags, although insulated would be a significant improvement.
However, I hadn't really considered monitoring the temperatures on the water heater or fridge, which would make sense to do considering those things are going all the time. Just monitoring the levels might help us reduce energy & save money big time.

There are so many useful items to help us live greener. My favorite would be 4 best-on-the-market compact fluorescent bulbs (75w equiv). Each month I try to replace a few of our old bulbs and this would help to get them all replaced that much sooner.
