There was a story on the news last night about the death of a 10 week old puppy. The family came home to find that their pet had been mauled by a wild animal, assumingly a coyote. I felt really bad for the family, but then I learned that they knew coyotes made a presence in their neighborhood, and they had seen them outside before, face to face with large dogs. I don't understand why you would leave your pets outside while you are away with the threat of coyotes? We have two cats that we keep indoors. Our condo association requires it, but we would do it anyway. I don't think that I could let my furry butts roam around outside by themselves... I would be far too worried about them being attacked by larger animals, hit by cars, or some crazy person harming them. Besides all the risk to them, they cause risk to other animals. Since we live in a 3rd floor condo, I let our kitties out on our deck when they are craving fresh air.
Sometimes I'll even put the one who will let me, Gracie (who is the kitty in the picture), on a leash and take her for walks. That gets me some funny looks!Dogs, I know, have to be able to get outside often. I don't think it should be too difficult, though, to keep an eye on your dog while it is outside, especially if you know there are dangerous wild animals around. There is no excuse for leaving your pet outside while you are not home, either. They may get restless stuck inside for a few hours, but isn't that better than being viciously killed? If it's a big problem, take them with you if you can, like my brother does with his cutie Lexus (pictured to the right), or have a neighbor pet sit. Your pet may not realize you were protecting its safety, but you will know when you get to wake up to its love the next day.
