I know there are a lot of weird products out there claiming to be eco-friendly. Some of the products aren't necessarily weird themselves, but the concepts can be. As an example, does anyone else find it odd that Wal-Mart is selling eco-friendly products? Wal-Mart?! That's another one of those things where I wonder if they are doing it because they care about the environment or just to attract the eco-friendly market. I tend to think it's the latter...

I came across some interesting "eco-friendly" products today and figured I'd share their oddness with you. Some I'm not sure would really classify as eco-friendly... but I'll leave that up to you. Edible Shoe CreamProbably the weirdest on the list. It's organic edible (yes, edible!) shoe cream. Apparently, it can be used for other purposes such as spreading on toast or as a lip balm. I don't know about you, but eating something that is advertised to be spread on a shoe does not interest me in the least. The product can be viewed here, although, at the time of this writing, the website is having issues displaying it (too many people rushing to buy their edible shoe cream?!?).

Batter Blaster

The appeal to this idea for me is that it is organic. I tend to be a lazy chef. I hate cooking, and I'm not very good at it. However, I'm not so sure I want to squirt my pancakes out of a bottle. I have yet to try this product, but I can't imagine it tasting too great. Maybe I shouldn't judge a pancake by its can? Batter Blaster

Why rent a hotel room in London when you can rent a bus? The buses are environmentally friendly with solar panels, and the waste and waste water are collected daily to convert into compost. That's one pretty interesting way to make use of a vehicle that may otherwise have gone to waste! Double Decker Living

From TerraPass:
"Our Climate Change Chocolate bar is meant to educate while tasting great. It comes in a wrapper with 15 tips for lightening your environmental impact. These helpful hints teach you how to save energy by making small changes to your daily habits. And of course, thanks to Bloomsberry & Co., you can be sure the finest chocolate is attached to these green lifestyle lessons.

Climate Change Chocolate comes with a verified TerraPass offset of 133 pounds of carbon dioxide reductions, the average American’s daily carbon impact. We hope this small offset will be the first taste of a lower-carbon lifestyle for Whole Foods shoppers who decide to take responsibility for their climate change impact."

The wrapper looks like it is made from recycled materials, but I am wondering how much of the rest of the production process is actually eco-friendly...

Aprilia Enjoy

An eco-friendly bike? Silly me, I thought bikes were already pretty eco-friendly as they are. The lazy side of me says, "Cool! I wouldn't have to put as much effort into biking around because the bike would do a lot of the work for me!" but the part of me that owns a bike for exercise thinks this is silly. I suppose it is good for those who want a bike for purposes of reducing emissions only, but if you want it for exercise as well, I stay stick with a regular old-fashioned bicycle. Aprilia Enjoy

And last but not least... edible shoe polishes contender for weirdest product in this list, the chopstick bra.

That is very clever, and very true. I'm not sure I really like where we are going, but at least there are people out there willing to make some changes...

  6. I've started looking at organic lifestyle issues and eco-friendly products recently, too. I have similar thoughts about what makes it "eco-friendly" ... it seems like the manufacturers have just found another way to segment the market with (often) very little proof that something is more healthy than the more normal options. And some of the stuff is just plain WEIRD ... but entertaining!

  7. OrganicGuy, some of the products are definitely over-hyped... but they do keep us entertained :D
