Je-Hyun Kim's Natural Year Phone

Cell phones made with recycled bottles? Phooey. How about a cell phone made with grass that biodegrades in 2 years?

You heard me right. Je-Hyun Kim has designed a phone that's not only green in concept, but green in color... naturally. The Natural Year Phone is meant to only last for it's functional lifespan (about 2 years), before it falls apart and biodegrades. The screen and keys are recyclable.

The phone is not yet commercially available.

A novel idea, but I'm not so sure it is well thought out. While the 100 million+ cell phones that are thrown into the landfills each year is a problem, I'm not sure a grassy phone is the right solution. What about the internal circuitry needed for the phone? And will it really last for 2 years? I'm not convinced.

I've also been wondering since I first saw this phone... would it give me grass stains?

  1. I wouldn't want to get that phone wet... lol. Perhaps a little less degradable would be more marketable. I like the general idea of a biodegradable, though.

  2. It would easy to personalize with a few flower seeds = a flower phone!

  3. I would love to buy such mobile phone, it looks so danm good, and it's fully recycleable. Would be the right mobile phone for me.

  4. I saw this phone before and I think it is a great idea. Usually people only keep cell phones for a year or two anyways so why not have one that at least is biodegradable.

  5. It's a nice idea, though it looks like it's missing some of the technical bits inside.

  6. LOL. I have to get myself equipped with one of those!

  7. Stefanie, it would be better, if the grass that being used to manufacturing the cell phones is wheat grass, as we can chew it after the cell phone fall apart itself!

  8. Cool idea indeed but it is question how functional it will be...

  9. I believe it looks really great, and sure I would buy some, if it really exists, but I've still some questions.

*) What will happen if it falls down? I believe it would be broken and unusable.

*) How much would this mobile phone cost, if it really exists?

*) How functional would it be? It looks like, that it can't work, because, where are all the technical parts?

All in all thanks for the great post.

  10. That is funny phone ,
I hardly imagine this phone in my arms. - But would be so much fun to gift it to my nephew, :)

  11. Robin, I would get it we either...a forest might spring out of it in the course of time...haha :)

  12. It's looks very nice.

I'd imagine it would fall apart.

It's not commercially available, not sure if there are plans to release it.

I was wondering the same thing myself, actually.

  14. Very creative product! But I wonder if it will work well as the normal phone?

  15. Is this phone real? What happens if it gets wet?
