X-Mark RageforstAs you know, today is Earth Day. Many people celebrate by participating in eco-friendly activities including gatherings or doing something to help out the environment on their own. There are a lot of different activities or actions that can be taken to take part in Earth Day celebrations, but these should also be something we consider doing every day, not just on Earth Day. Mother Earth needs our help year round! I've come up with a list of some activities we can do any day of the year to do our part.

  • Recycle: Take those empty cans and old newspapers to your local recycling center. You'd be surprised at how much of your current waste can actually be recycled!
  • Pick up litter: Litter is everywhere. Why not help out the earth by picking some of it up? You can do this in local parks, on beaches, or even in parking lots. Be careful, of course, not to touch anything dangerous.
  • Unplug and go outside: Electronics continue to use energy, even when not plugged in. If it's a nice day, unplug your electronics and go outside for a few hours. Your home will use less energy and you can get some fresh air and exercise!
  • Plant a tree: This may not be possible everywhere, but if you have a yard, you can plant a tree with your family and enjoy watching it grow over the years. Make it an apple tree and you will have a reward for your hard work every year! Can't plant a tree? Donate one. For $5, a "virtual tree" is planted in the Almighty Forest for interactivity, and a real tree is planted in a wildlife refuge.
  • Go shopping: For lightbulbs, that is! Replace all your old, energy-hogging bulbs with energy efficient ones. Can't afford to replace them all right now? Start with your most used lamp or room, and slowly replace the rest in your home. Don't forget to bring your reusable shopping bags!

These are just a few activity ideas for Earth Day and every day, feel free to share your own ideas. What did you do for Earth Day this year?
