After reading a blog post by a homeopathic doctor I used to see in Connecticut, I decided to get prepared for the H1N1 flu virus. I have 3 kids in public school, one of which is a thumb sucker. I knew that since our diets aren’t 100% clean and healthy (i.e. raw vegan), we’d likely succumb to the illness eventually. I don't believe all the hype around this virus and it's definitely not something I'd spend too much time worrying about. But the fact remains, that a flu of any kind is no fun and I prefer to avoid it!

Dr. Shevin mentioned briefly in his blog that his patients were responding well to a homeopathic remedy called Bryonia Alba. I picked up some Bryonia Alba 30c from the health food store.

When H1N1 hit my kids’ school, I began giving everyone in the house Bryonia Alba 30c three times a day. For about a week and a half we got through the “pandemic” unscathed.

Then the kids had a day off and I was working outside of our home for the day. When I got home in the evening my oldest daughter had a 103 degree fever. She was playing dominos and said she felt fine, just cold. I began giving her the Bryonia Alba about every 20 minutes. She was absolutely fine with no symptoms other than a low grade fever until Friday.

Friday morning she decided she was fine and wanted to get out of bed and play. She also wasn’t taking her remedy or her powdered vitamin C. I didn’t push it because she appeared to be fine.

Friday night proved us wrong. As evening hit she got worse. I switched to a different remedy, which in hindsight was the wrong move. (I still don’t know why I did that!) By 3 a.m. she ended up with a 103.6 fever and was so uncomfortable she said, “I feel like I’m dying.” I gave her a fever reducer, which is not something I do often. I knew she needed sleep.

As soon as she woke in the morning I began giving her 200c Bryonia Alba. She improved throughout the day. By evening her fever was gone and she was playing dominos again. On Sunday she was fine, she even went rollerblading.

Everyone in the house, including the little thumb sucker, remained healthy. This is very unusual for us. In the past , if one of us got the flu, we all got the flu. There was no avoiding it. But this time, everyone continued taking their Bryonia Alba daily…except for me.

I didn’t take the remedy on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Wednesday afternoon I started getting the chills. My fever was 100.3. I immediately started taking the Bryonia Alba 200c. It was such a strange feeling. It was as if my head knew I should be really sick, but my body felt really good. I could feel these achy waves of heat come over my body and every time they hit, I’d take another dose of the remedy.

It’s now 6 a.m., the morning after my fever started. I have no fever, and no symptoms. No cough, no runny nose, no aches, no fever. I feel fine. I got a good sleep.

24 hours after my fever started I was ready to walk out the door to take my daughter to dance. Then I realized, just because I have no symptoms doesn’t mean I don’t have the virus in my system. I decided to stay in.

The other children in my kids’ classes were out of school for at least a week once they got the fever. In all the cases I heard about, if a sibling got it, the whole family got it. But, not in our house. I attribute our quick recovery and minimal symptoms to the Bryonia Alba.

I think it’s important to have the remedy on hand and take it immediately at the onset of symptoms or when you think you’ve come in contact with the virus.

My family doctor says that the H1N1 virus has died down here in the Northeast. He also said we’ll probably see another wave of it mid winter. If you know that the virus is active in your area give Bryonia Alba 200c a try. Good luck and be well!

  1. I trust more a homeopathy remedy than a vaccine. I often use homeopathy for treating normal flu, and is working great and very fast.

  2. It's good to see you've food a wonderful way to fight this H1N1 flu. I'll have to stock up on Bryonia Alba from now on.

  3. I think that this panic with H1N1 is too big. When you're ill just use normal medicine that you always use for flue and you will be alright. There is no reason to panic about this topic;)

  4. I would also try to do anything best for my children if I had any. I think I fully understand your efforts to provide them cover from old and new flu. And I think it is great that you are trying so much.

I agree. There is a lot of unnecessary panic surrounding the H1N1 virus. However, I've found that with 3 kids, it's always best to do whatever I can to prevent illness, or at least decrease the severity of the symptoms.

There's nothing worse than being sick and needing to care for 3 little ones with the flu!

  6. This H1N1 flu has been blown way out of proportion. The death statistics are just typical of normal flu. What must change though, is people's attitudes towards health. That makes all the difference, because unhealthy people will have problems with ANY flu to begin with.

  7. Just to be clear about my stance on H1N1, I made a minor edit to this article.

After reading some of the comments, it was obvious that I didn't make it clear enough that I do not buy all the hype around this flu.

My point in writing this article was to share my experience with a remedy that I believe helped my family decrease the severity of symptoms associated to H1N1. All hype aside, having the flu sucks. And it sucks even more if you have to care for sick children while you have a flu of any kind.

Sorry for not being clear about that.

  8. I think homeopathy is not enough in this case - this disease is treated with the help of antibiotics, as I know.

Actually Susan, H1N1 is a virus and antibiotics do not kill viruses. So antibiotics will not help you if you have H1N1.

  10. I try to prevent flu with more citrus, especially lemon and hot tea and hot soups. I do not want to vaccinate
